Liquid glass was invented in Turkey and the patent is held by Nanopool, a family-owned German company. Research on the product was carried out at the Saarbrücken Institute for New Materials. Nanopool is already in negotiations in the UK with a number of companies and with the National Health Service, with a view to its widespread adoption.

The liquid glass spray produces a water-resistant coating only around 100 nanometers (15-30 molecules) thick. On this nanoscale the glass is highly flexible and breathable. The coating is environmentally harmless and non-toxic, and easy to clean using only water or a simple wipe with a damp cloth. It repels bacteria, water and dirt, and resists heat, UV light and even acids. UK project manager with Nanopool, Neil McClelland, said soon almost every product you purchase will be coated with liquid glass.

Food processing companies in Germany have already carried out trials of the spray, and found sterile surfaces that usually needed to be cleaned with strong bleach to keep them sterile needed only a hot water rinse if they were coated with liquid glass. The levels of sterility were higher for the glass-coated surfaces, and the surfaces remained sterile for months.

Other organizations, such as a train company and a hotel chain in the UK, and a hamburger chain in Germany, are also testing liquid glass for a wide range of uses. A year-long trial of the spray in a Lancashire hospital also produced “very promising” results for a range of applications including coatings for equipment, medical implants, catheters, sutures and bandages. The war graves association in the UK is investigating using the spray to treat stone monuments and grave stones, since trials have shown the coating protects against weathering and graffiti. Trials in Turkey are testing the product on monuments such as the Ataturk Mausoleum in Ankara.

The liquid glass coating is breathable, which means it can be used on plants and seeds. Trials in vineyards have found spraying vines increases their resistance to fungal diseases, while other tests have shown sprayed seeds germinate and grow faster than untreated seeds, and coated wood is not attacked by termites. Other vineyard applications include coating corks with liquid glass to prevent “corking” and contamination of wine. The spray cannot be seen by the naked eye, which means it could also be used to treat clothing and other materials to make them stain-resistant. McClelland said you can “pour a bottle of wine over an expensive silk shirt and it will come right off”.

In the home, spray-on glass would eliminate the need for scrubbing and make most cleaning products obsolete. Since it is available in both water-based and alcohol-based solutions, it can be used in the oven, in bathrooms, tiles, sinks, and almost every other surface in the home, and one spray is said to last a year.

Liquid glass spray is perhaps the most important nanotechnology product to emerge to date. It will be available in DIY stores in Britain soon, with prices starting at around £5 ($8 US). Other outlets, such as many supermarkets, may be unwilling to stock the products because they make enormous profits from cleaning products that need to be replaced regularly, and liquid glass would make virtually all of them obsolete.

They are most common when an advancing storm front causes moist air to rise, then cool to the point where it becomes a cloud known as the dew point.

When this happens along a front, a roll cloud can form, often with air actually circulating along the horizontal axis of the cloud.

Although it looks like a sideways tornado, these clouds cannot become one.

The discovery of the five exoplanets “contributes to our understanding of how planetary systems form and evolve from the gas and dust disks that give rise to both the stars and their planets,” NASA’s William Borucki, principal science investigator for the Kepler mission, said in a statement.

But all five exoplanets are “too hot for life as we know it”, NASA said.

The newly discovered planets are known as “hot Jupiters” because of their large masses and extreme temperatures, which range from 1204 – 1649 degrees Celsius – hotter than molten lava.

Their orbits last between three and five days, meaning they follow paths close to their stars, which are hotter and larger than the Earth’s sun, NASA said.

The smallest of the newly discovered planets is roughly the size of Neptune, the fourth largest planet in Earth’s solar system, and the biggest is about the size of Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system.

One of the planets, which have been given the unimaginative names of Kepler 4b, 5b, 6b, 7b and 8b, is similar in many ways to Neptune, although its irradiation level is much higher.

Another planet is one of the least dense ever discovered and, along with the other three, confirms the existence of planets with densities substantially lower than those predicted for gas giant planets.

The five exoplanets were among discoveries made by the Kepler space telescope in the first six weeks after it became operational in May last year.

Borucki presented the early discoveries and other findings at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Washington on Monday.

Kepler looks for the signatures of planets by measuring dips in a star’s brightness which are caused by planets crossing in front of them and periodically blocking out part of the starlight.

The size of the planet can be derived from the size of the dip in brightness while the temperature can be estimated from the characteristics of the star it orbits and the planet’s orbital period.

Kepler is NASA’s first mission in search of Earth-like planets orbiting stars similar to our sun.

It launched in March last year, equipped with the largest camera ever sent into space – a 95-megapixel array of charge-coupled devices – and is expected to continue its science operations until at least November 2012.

Manhattan Project:  The Manhattan Project was the codename for a project conducted during World War II to develop the first atomic bomb. The project was led by the United States, and included participation from the United Kingdom and Canada. Formally designated as the Manhattan Engineer District (MED), it refers specifically to the period of the project from 1942–1946 under the control of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, under the administration of General Leslie R. A new model of the way the THz waves interact with DNA explains how the damage is done and why evidence has been so hard to gather

Great things are expected of terahertz waves, the radiation that fills the slot in the electromagnetic spectrum between microwaves and the infrared. Terahertz waves pass through non-conducting materials such as clothes , paper, wood and brick and so cameras sensitive to them can peer inside envelopes, into living rooms and “frisk” people at distance.

The way terahertz waves are absorbed and emitted can also be used to determine the chemical composition of a material. And even though they don’t travel far inside the body, there is great hope that the waves can be used to spot tumours near the surface of the skin.

With all that potential, it’s no wonder that research on terahertz waves has exploded in the last ten years or so.

But what of the health effects of terahertz waves? At first glance, it’s easy to dismiss any notion that they can be damaging. Terahertz photons are not energetic enough to break chemical bonds or ionise atoms or molecules, the chief reasons why higher energy photons such as x-rays and UV rays are so bad for us. But could there be another mechanism at work?

The evidence that terahertz radiation damages biological systems is mixed. “Some studies reported significant genetic damage while others, although similar, showed none,” say Boian Alexandrov at the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and a few buddies. Now these guys think they know why.

Alexandrov and co have created a model to investigate how THz fields interact with double-stranded DNA and what they’ve found is remarkable. They say that although the forces generated are tiny, resonant effects allow THz waves to unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication. That’s a jaw dropping conclusion.

And it also explains why the evidence has been so hard to garner. Ordinary resonant effects are not powerful enough to do do this kind of damage but nonlinear resonances can. These nonlinear instabilities are much less likely to form which explains why the character of THz genotoxic
effects are probabilistic rather than deterministic, say the team.

This should set the cat among the pigeons. Of course, terahertz waves are a natural part of environment, just like visible and infrared light. But a new generation of cameras are set to appear that not only record terahertz waves but also bombard us with them. And if our exposure is set to increase, the question that urgently needs answering is what level of terahertz exposure is safe.

#7-Film (And Film Cameras). It’s a digital world and you don’t have to worry about conserving your shots for the right one or processing times to find out what your photos look like.

#8-Yellow Pages And Address Books- Big heavy books that left ink marks and your mother would complain about leaving finger prints when you ‘forgot’ to wash your hands, we check the internet.

#11-Wires/Cables-Wireless technology is in it’s early stages of development but we are seeing more devices communicating with each other without wires as a connection.

#12-Hand-Written Letters-with virtually every classroom now equipped with computers, the emphasis is on typing your assignments and communication is by email or sms on mobile phones.

Have you ever succumbed to temptation and had “just one more level?” Do you find yourself playing games and then later realising you had other more important things you should have been doing? Like in my Brothers case, sleeping because work was only 3 hours away. Do you miss showering for days on end, or find yourself suffering from headaches because you haven’t stopped for a drink and have been staring at a screen for the past 24hours. Are we just big kids?

I would say all gamers would have pushed the limits of gameplay at some point. When does it become a problem?

Is it when your having a conversation with someone and your mind is preoccupied with strategies on how to pass the level your currently stuck on? when the fantasy world becomes reality for you? When your wife/girlfriend threatens to leave you because you failed your end of relationship duties? Or is it death? So, why does this happen?

A little research has helped me find the reason for this and also an understanding, hopefully for everyone out there in dire straits aswell. Games are chemically addictive. These claims centre around dopamine; the chemical our brains release when we’re enjoying something. So when we find ourselves enjoying a particular game, a lot of this chemical gets released, which reinforces our pleasure in the gaming experience.

When we produce more and more of this chemical from marathon gaming experiences we ultimately become used to having wave upon wave of dopamine pleasure. This stimulates cravings for more gaming experiences. So what’s the side effect?

You become an addict– anything that releases dopamine in the brain is likely to reinforce brain maps, which are the paths of neurons that build up when we repeat an activity. As you play more and more games, your brain rewires itself to become better at playing them and, more importantly, it begins to expect that you’ll play them. Scary but how many of you have been there or are experiencing this as you read?

Rooms, large or small require huge amounts of sound pressure to fill the room with Low Frequency Effects (LFE). By having two subs setup up correctly, they will add atleast +3dB  of bass without any adjustment to the LFE level on your amp. What that means for you is, sound of 50 dB as an example has ten times the intensity of a sound of 40 dB, but is only twice as loud. Loudness doubles with each increase of 10 dB in intensity, so an increase in +3dB will result in less stress for both subwoofers. This will also apply by placing the subwoofers in the corners of the rooms. Experiment with ‘distance positioning’ and you will be pleasantly surprised. At high volumes your subwoofers will start producing fast stop-start bass sounds and explosions.

Subwoofer manufactuers like Rel are excellent for using your subwoofers high-level speaker terminals as an Low Frequency add on to your main stereo speakers. Two subwoofers offer better stereo separation of main-channel bass effects and improved musical tone. I personally have done this with the center channel in my surround sound setup. This created a ‘fuller’ sounding speaker allowing access to some of the lower frequencies that are commonly lost in the center channel and allowed the vocals to sound more dynamic. Batman’s voice went from sounding like Rick Astley to Luciano Pavarotti.

Seriously, too much is really an excuse for “my budget……….”, two subwoofers should be your end result.

Scientists have now accepted that the intersection of 2 problems – the deterioration of Earth’s Magnetosphere during the Sun’s Polar shift in 2012 (as recently discussed) will be the real concern as we approach 2012 :

Scientists have found two large leaks in Earth’s magnetosphere, the region around our planet that shields us from severe solar storms. Now in 2012 the suns poles will reverse (not the earths as wrongly said on many 2012 sites – see below!) , during this time a massive solar storm will reck havoc on earth – usually this is no problem – but now due to the ‘cracks’ in it, Earth’s protective Magnetosphere may fail us,  so the violent solar and electromagnetic radiation will make it through and cause many problems to life as we know it (eg: disabling communication satellites, mobile phones, effective sleep patterns,  & radiation poisoning of humans) Also as earth has to absorb extra radiation & energy this will cause possible changes within the earth’s core – with energy being re-dissipated from the earth with new volcanoes formed and crust movement.

Important Note: many websites say Earths Poles will shift during 2012 but this is not true. According to NASA, Planet pole reversals (not suns – which like ours can reverse poles quickly in a few years)  take a few thousand years to complete, and during that time–contrary to popular belief–the magnetic field does not vanish - “It just gets more complicated” -so this is probably why our  Magnetosphere is going weird at the moment. (Another controversial idea is that the Earth’s magnetosphere could be influenced temporarily by our current position in the solar system in the Milky way as we past by a big black hole, however theories of the 2012 galactic plane alignment are heavy disputed at the moment )  - Either way its true that Earths Magnetosphere is very weak at the moment and yes this is a sign of initial pole shifting but not complete pole reversal of Earth – this won’t happen in 2012 as its a slow process and is predicted to take another 1200 years to complete. What is of major concern overall is how strong the Magnetosphere will be during the solar storms of 2012.
